DOT SAP Help for Trucking Companies
A clear next step when a driver has a failed DOT test, refusal, or FMCSA Clearinghouse issue.
When a CDL driver has a DOT drug or alcohol violation, the employer and driver may not know what to do next. The driver may be listed as prohibited in the FMCSA Clearinghouse and may not be able to perform safety-sensitive duties until the required SAP and Return-to-Duty process is completed.
SBR Consulting provides DOT-qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) evaluations and Return-to-Duty guidance for drivers, owner-operators, trucking companies, fleets, and DOT-regulated employers.
Led by Scott Roberts, SAP, LAADC, NCAC I, SBR Consulting helps trucking companies and drivers understand the required next steps clearly and professionally.
Virtual SAP appointments are available nationwide. In-person appointments are available when appropriate.
What Should a Trucking Company Do After a DOT Violation?
If a driver has a failed DOT drug test, alcohol violation, refusal, or FMCSA Clearinghouse issue, the employer should take the situation seriously and move quickly.
- Remove the driver from safety-sensitive duties if required.
- Confirm the violation and documentation.
- Identify the employer DER or responsible company contact.
- Refer the driver to a DOT-qualified SAP.
- Follow the SAP’s required recommendation and Return-to-Duty process.
- Complete Return-to-Duty testing and follow-up testing requirements as directed.
SBR Consulting helps drivers and employers understand the SAP process so they know what to expect and how to move forward.

Important Note for Employers
SBR Consulting does not replace your drug testing company, C/TPA, consortium, or compliance provider. We provide DOT SAP evaluations and Return-to-Duty guidance when a driver needs a qualified SAP after a DOT drug or alcohol violation.
If your company already works with a testing facility, C/TPA, or compliance provider, SBR Consulting can work alongside that relationship as the SAP resource.
